Alabama man sentenced to 12 years in prison on child pornography charges

People in Alabama and beyond who are convicted of sex crimes face very harsh penalties. One recent case in Alabama serves as a reminder that a conviction can be life altering.

A 50-year-old man was recently sentenced to 12 years and seven months in prison for receiving and possessing child pornography. After he is released, he will also face supervised release for the rest of his life and be forced to register as a sex offender.

The man's home was searched in September after authorities traced child pornography that had been sent over the Internet to his home computer. Authorities claim to have found thousands of pornographic images involving children.

The man was indicted by a federal grand jury and pleaded guilty to receiving and possessing child pornography in November.

In cases of child pornography, it may be best for the accused to consult with an experienced criminal defense attorney. An attorney can investigate the evidence in a case and work to vigorously defend their client against the charges.

Sex crimes are particularly serious. As evidenced by this specific case, a person can face consequences for the rest of their life if they are found guilty of the charges.

In addition to jail time and being forced to register as a sex offender, a person's reputation may be destroyed. It may be hard to find work or even a place to live.

Because of the stiff penalties, it is often wise to seek legal assistance. The justice system is complicated and often confusing. An attorney who has a broad understanding of the law will be able to protect the rights of the accused and work towards a favorable outcome.
