Accountant accused of embezzling more than $41,000

Embezzlement is a crime that usually involves the theft of assets by a person who has been put in a position of trust. It is a serious crime whether a person lives in Birmingham or elsewhere. However, with all criminal cases, a person accused of embezzlement remains innocent unless they are proven guilty in a court of law.

A 40-year-old accountant in a nearby state was recently accused of embezzling more than $41,000 from a client. She was arrested earlier this month and has been charged with felony theft. The woman apparently confessed to misusing her client's credit card account. Authorities say additional charges may be filed.

According to one source, the woman worked for an accounting agency called Execute Now. She was working with the Baton Rouge Area Chamber and had reportedly been given a credit card to make purchases for her client.

As the Baton Rouge Area Chamber was reconciling their credit card account they noticed some unauthorized charges and called the authorities. The woman allegedly made $6,000 worth of purchases at fast food restaurants, made $35,000 worth of purchases at Walmart and put $3,000 on the card to cover her home utility expenses. In addition, she allegedly bought wrestling tickets for $345. In total, the woman is accused of illegally charging $41,699 on the Baton Rouge Area Chamber's credit card account.

The woman has since been fired from her job. The president of Execute Now has also filed criminal charges against the former employee.

Because a person's entire life could be affected by accusations as serious as this, someone in a similar situation would be wise to begin working with an experienced criminal defense attorney as early on in the process as possible. An attorney will work to defend an individual against the charges and mitigate any possible consequences.
