Alabama man faces felony charges for alleged assault

Whether you live in Alabama or elsewhere, people make mistakes. There are times when people let their emotions get the best of them. Unfortunately, one Alabama man's frustration could end up costing him 10 years of his life.

A 55-year-old man was recently charged with felony assault after he allegedly punched an umpire in the nose after attending his grandchild's softball game. According to police, the 55-year-old man was heckling the umpire throughout the game. Afterward, he approached the umpire in the parking lot. Police say that is where the alleged incident took place.

In most circumstances, the man would face misdemeanor charges. However, because the umpire is considered an official under Alabama law, the 55-year-old man was charged with a felony. If convicted, he could face as many as 10 years in prison.

Alabama residents who find themselves in a similar situation would be wise to begin preparing a strong defense against the charges. In most cases, it is best to rely on the expertise of an experienced criminal defense attorney.

In a case like this, an attorney will likely work to have the charges reduced. Although the 20-year-old umpire is considered an official under Alabama law, they may question the validity of that title.

When someone is accused of committing a crime, it is important that they are charged appropriately. When someone is charged with a felony they could face much more serious consequences. A person may endure more prison time. In addition, a conviction could make it difficult to find future employment or even a place to live.
