Drug conviction could put Baldwin County resident away for life

A 43-year-old Baldwin County man could spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted on drug charges last week. Benigno Garza was arrested in 2009 when officers from a county task force discovered remnants of an active methamphetamine lab in his home.

According to Assistant District Attorney Brett Anderson, the task force initially obtained a warrant to search for marijuana plants in Garza's home but once inside

found an active meth lab and evidence of past meth-producing activity instead. The officers then found meth in a trailer and an apartment which they could connect to Garza, as well as the marijuana plants the task force initially hoped to find. After the discovery, Garza was charged in Baldwin County Circuit Court with first-degree manufacturing of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sentencing for the conviction will occur in few months. Garza could potentially face the harsh punishment of life in prison because of two prior convictions, according to Assistant District Attorney Anderson. If you or someone you know has been arrested on drug charges contact an experienced attorney.
