Alabama man faces capital murder charges

A 22-year-old Alabama man could face the death penalty if he is convicted of capital murder charges. The 22-year-old faces three capital murder charges along with two counts of second-degree assault after he allegedly opened fire at a party near Auburn University.

According to police, three men were killed on June 9 at an apartment complex near the school's campus. Three men were also wounded. Although two of those men have since been released from the hospital, a 20-year-old man remains in critical condition. All of the men were under the age of 21.

Authorities had been searching for the 22-year-old for three days. He turned himself in on the evening of June 12 at a Montgomery courthouse.

The 22-year-old appeared in court for the first time today. A judge denied bail.

This is not the first time the man has faced criminal charges. Three years ago he was charged with first-degree assault after he allegedly shot a 16-year-old boy. However, the charge was dropped after the 16-year-old told prosecutors the now 22-year-old was not the man who shot him.

No matter the charges, people who are accused of committing a crime have rights. They remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law and are entitled to a strong defense.

After reading news reports it is easy to assume someone is guilty. However, there are always two sides to a story. Everyone is entitled to share their side of the story in court. A conviction can only be secured after prosecutors have proven their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
