Birmingham police officer accused of arson

When people in Birmingham are charged with a serious crime, they remain innocent unless they are proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. One man's criminal defense attorney is reminding the public of that after his client, a Birmingham police officer, was accused of arson.

Last week, the 27-year-old police officer was charged with two counts of arson and one count of criminal mischief and attempted arson in nearby Warrior. Now police claim he was involved in one of 13 suspicious fires in Ensley. He faces additional arson charges.

The 27-year-old began working for the Birmingham Police Department three years ago. His attorney says he is doing as well as can be expected since being charged with the crimes. The man continues to maintain his innocence.

Arson is a crime in which a person intentionally burns a structure of any kind. It is a serious crime. Someone who is convicted of arson could face harsh penalties.

In this specific case, though, the man's lawyer has pointed out that a charge is very different from a conviction. Only after all of the facts and evidence in a case has been presented to a jury can a person be found guilty of a crime.

The criminal justice system is complex and can be overwhelming. When people in Birmingham are accused of committing a crime they may feel helpless. However, working with an experienced criminal defense attorney is often beneficial. An attorney will use their resources to investigate every aspect of a case and work hard to defend an individual against the charges.
