Routine Traffic Stop Leads to High Speed Chase

An Alabaster man has been charged with one count of attempted murder, two counts of attempted assault, reckless endangerment, and attempting to elude police after a routine traffic stop lead to a dangerous police chase. Police say Courtney Sherrod Kennedy was being pulled over for an expired tag when he sped away before being issued a citation. Alabaster Deputy Police Chief Curtis Rigney said in a statement that Kennedy had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest when the traffic stop occurred.

After Kennedy fled the stop, several other officers got involved in a high speed chase, which led to Kennedy allegedly hitting

three police cars and injuring an officer in the process. After eventually jumping out of the vehicle, police say Kennedy then fled on foot into a wooded area where he evaded police for another two hours. Help was called in from Shelby County sheriff's deputies as well as from officers in the Helena and Calera police departments in the search for Kennedy. He was eventually found near an apartment complex in Alabaster.

Kennedy is being held at the Shelby County Jail on a $79,000 bond and could potentially face serious prison time if he is found guilty of the crimes of which he stands accused. This case highlights the serious turn seemingly routine crimes can take and the importance of finding good legal representation if they do.
