DUI Crackdown Expected On Fourth Of July Holiday

The Alabama Department of Public Safety has announced that there will be a four-day safety crackdown by state troopers surrounding the Fourth of July holiday. Beginning at 12:01 AM on Wednesday and lasting through midnight Sunday, state troopers will be out in full force patrolling Alabama highways in an attempt to make roads safer for the high number of expected holiday travelers.

In what is largely a clampdown on crimes like DUI and other unsafe practices such as speeding and failing to buckle, a spokeswoman for the department said in a statement, "We'll have as many troopers out there as possible." State troopers reported nine traffic fatalities during last year's Fourth of July weekend and believe alcohol was a factor in a majority of the deaths.

AAA has estimated around 42.3 million people will make a trip of 50 miles or more during the crackdown period, which would match the record number of travelers set in 2007. State troopers all along Alabama highways and interstates will be setting up roadblocks and looking for signs of drunk drivers. If you or someone you know is charged with a DUI or other crime during the holiday, contact an experienced criminal defense attorney.
