Brothers will get a new trial after 24 years behind bars

Unfortunately, there are situations in which innocent people in Birmingham and beyond are sent to prison. However, a recent story in the news shows that people who are wrongly convicted should not give up hope.

Two brothers were convicted of murder in 1988. However, they have maintained their innocence for more than two decades. Today, they are free on bond and awaiting a new trial after an exchange on Facebook cleared their names.

This case appears to be a situation in which the brothers were in the wrong place at the wrong time. In 1987, they were in a Detroit neighborhood the same night a drug dealer was killed. A witness claimed to have seen the two brothers enter a home and then flee a short time after a gunshot went off.

After spending years behind bars, the men may get a second chance at life. Another man has come forward and said that he was one of the men that went to the Detroit home in 1987 to buy drugs and later fled. His side of the story came to light after an exchange on Facebook discussing the brother's case.

The two brothers will be given a new trial. For now, they are out on bond and trying to get reacquainted with life outside of prison.

"We're feeling very happy and elated," one of the brothers said. "The last few days have been like a whirlwind."

In many criminal cases, authorities will rely on witness testimony. However, this story is proof that witnesses can get things very wrong. Although these two brothers are free today, they have lost a large portion of their lives because of one witness's false identification.
