Former Alabama police officer faces sex crimes allegations

Despite a grand jury failing to indict him four years ago, a 61-year-old recently retired Alabama police officer has been charged with various sex crimes. According to one report, the charges stem from a previous investigation in 2008 when the man was accused of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl while he was working as a school resource officer.

The 61-year-old man was arrested on Aug. 1. He is charged with first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy and two counts of first-degree sexual abuse.

If the former police officer is convicted of the first-degree rape or first-degree sodomy charges he could be sentenced to life in prison.

As evidenced by the potential penalties the former police officer may face, sex crimes allegations are very serious. In addition to the potential criminal penalties, a person's reputation may forever be tarnished even if they are found to be not guilty.

It is not clear how this specific case will turn out. However, in situations like this, the accused would be wise to rely on the expertise of an experienced criminal defense attorney. An attorney can investigate every piece of evidence to mount an aggressive defense against the charges.

In this case, a criminal defense attorney may look deeper into the case to determine why a grand jury failed to return an indictment four years ago. It would appear that there may be holes in the prosecution's case against the former police officer.

Although the charges against the man are very serious, the public cannot rush to conclusions. After all, as is the case with all criminal charges, the accused remains innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
