Birmingham man accused of distributing heroin

A criminal charge and a conviction are two very different things. However, the media and general public are often quick to assume guilt even before all of the facts in a case are presented. Whether people face drug charges, drunk driving charges or charges for other crimes, they remain innocent unless they are proven guilty in a court of law.

A Birmingham man is fighting for his innocence after he was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly distributing heroin on three separate occasions between May 31 and July 30 in Jefferson County.

People who face drug crime accusations should not take the charges lightly. If convicted, they could face significant time behind bars. A conviction could also affect their future job opportunities and even where they live.

As with all criminal cases, it is wise to rely on an experienced criminal defense attorney. An attorney will examine the evidence in a case to determine how best to proceed.

In some cases, an attorney will negotiate a plea agreement with prosecutors. The accused may face a lighter sentence by pleading guilty to the charges.

While a plea agreement may be best in certain situations, there may be instances when it is wise to vigorously fight the charges. After all, prosecutors have a duty to prove that the accused is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Because of the lack of evidence in certain cases that may be challenging.

Facing criminal charges of any kind can be difficult. However, with the right help, the accused may face reduced penalties. In certain cases, the charges may be dropped altogether.
