Birmingham man faces attempted murder charge

A 72-year-old man was recently charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting the manager of his former Birmingham apartment complex.

The incident happened on the morning of Oct. 5, the day after the 72-year-old was reportedly evicted from his apartment. The man allegedly used a hammer to damage numerous vehicles before shooting the manager of the apartment complex. Authorities claim he also hit multiple vehicles with his van.

Birmingham police arrived at the apartment complex around 10 a.m. The apartment manager was reportedly found on the floor of the office with serious injuries. She was taken to the hospital and first reported to be in critical condition.

According to reports, the 72-year-old man turned himself into police that same day. He was charged with attempted murder. He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and held on $60,000 bond.

Criminal charges of this nature are very serious. If convicted, a person could face stiff penalties. However, those penalties cannot be levied against an individual unless a conviction is secured. Until then, an accused individual remains innocent.

In general, attempted crimes occur when a person intends to commit a specific offense and takes action to carry out that crime, but fails to complete it. Often, in order for prosecutors to secure a conviction, an individual's intent must be determined.

When Birmingham residents face such serious criminal charges it is often wise to obtain legal representation. An experienced criminal defense attorney will evaluate the evidence to determine the best course of action going forward.
