Birmingham man faces life in prison with the possibility of parole

A 46-year-old Birmingham man was recently sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of an acquaintance 10 months ago. However, had he not pleaded guilty to manslaughter, he could have faced life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The shooting took place on Jan. 16. The attorney for the accused argued that both men involved in the incident had weapons. The 39-year-old victim had a knife. The 46-year-old man fired his weapon in order to defend himself after the two men began arguing, according to his attorney.

Rather than risk the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole, the accused chose to plead guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter shortly before his trial was scheduled to begin. He was originally charged with murder.

At his sentencing, the 46-year-old man expressed remorse for his actions that left the 39-year-old man dead. He said that he prays for the victim's family often.

People who face serious criminal charges often must weigh their options as they determine how to proceed forward with their case. With the help of an experienced attorney, others may decide that pleading guilty to lesser charges is wise in light of the evidence prosecutors have against them.

However, there are other instances when it is best to vigorously fight the charges against an individual. In doing so, an individual may end up walking away from court with their freedom intact. In either instance, it is best to rely on the expertise of a criminal defense attorney.
