Birmingham man faces 25 years in prison

Drug charges of any kind are serious, but federal drug charges may result in even more serious penalties.

A 44-year-old Birmingham man was recently sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in a drug ring that distributed crack and cocaine. Prosecutors say the man was the drug ring's main source for cocaine.

The 44-year-old faced various charges, such as conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute and distribution of cocaine. He was indicted, along with three others, by a federal grand jury in March. He pleaded guilty to the charges six months later.

A story like this shows how serious federal drug charges are and how devastating a conviction can be.

The man in this story pled guilty to all of the charges. However, depending on the circumstances, an individual may choose to vigorously fight the charges. After all, people who are charged with a crime are innocent unless prosecutors can prove otherwise.

As we've discussed in previous posts, in certain situations, negotiating a plea agreement may be in a person's best interest. Many criminal cases are settled through plea agreements. By pleading guilty to reduced charges, the accused could face less severe penalties.

Criminal defense attorneys have a broad understanding of the criminal justice system. In determining how to proceed forward with a criminal case, it is often best to rely on the expertise of a criminal defense attorney. In the end, a Birmingham resident could face lesser penalties and be able to move forward with their lives more quickly.
