Birmingham ranked as one of country's most dangerous cities

According to Forbes magazine, Birmingham is the fifth most dangerous city in the country due to the number of violent crimes that occur within the city. However, it should be noted that Birmingham's violent crime rate has declined in recent years.

Detroit topped the list as the most dangerous city in the country. The violent crime rate dropped by 10 percent; however, more than 340 murders took place last year.

Birmingham's violent crime rate sits at 1,483 per 100,000 residents. According to the U.S. Census Department, the amount of crime in Birmingham can be blamed on drug activity and the high amounts of poverty in the city.

When crimes do occur, people in Birmingham may face serious accusations. Criminal charges of any kind can result in severe penalties. However, everyone in Birmingham and beyond has the right to vigorously fight the charges with the help of an experienced criminal defense attorney.

It is common for Birmingham residents to see or hear about alleged crimes in the news. They are often quick to assume an individual's guilt. Despite that, those who are accused of serious crimes remain innocent unless prosecutors can prove them guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

Individuals who are convicted of certain crimes could face life-altering consequences. Some could be sentenced to prison for the rest of their lives. In order to lessen these severe penalties it is often best to work with an experienced criminal defense attorney. An attorney will review the details of a case to determine how to proceed forward.
