Drunk driving arrests can be costly

Tonight, people all over the country will be ringing in the new year. It is a time to celebrate with family and friends and look back on the past year. Alcohol is a prominent part of most New Year's Eve parties. As people are celebrating, though, they should do what they can to avoid a drunk driving arrest.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 10,000 people died in alcohol-related crashes in 2010. In addition to potential injuries, a drunk driving arrest can be costly. A drunk driving arrest can cost people up to $10,000. People may face jail fees, fines, driver's license reinstatement fees and high insurance rates. A drunk driving charge could even affect a person's employment if they are required to drive for work.

Whether you live in Birmingham or elsewhere, it would be wise to plan ahead for this New Year's celebration. Determine early on who will be the designated driver. If no one volunteers, plan to call a cab company for a safe ride home.

People who are arrested for DUI should know that it is not a hopeless situation. Law enforcement officers must follow strict procedures. A person's rights may be violated if those procedures are not closely followed. In addition, Breathalyzer machines are not always 100 percent accurate. A malfunction could result in inaccurate readings.

In order to properly examine the evidence in a case, people who face drunk driving charges would likely benefit from consulting with an experienced criminal defense attorney. An attorney will work towards a positive outcome for the accused. In the end, the accused could face less steep fines.
