Former Alabama police officer faces drug charges

Everyone makes mistakes, and a recent story shows that even those who promise to protect and serve the public have lapses in judgment.

Authorities claim that a former Alabama police officer was caught delivering more than three pounds of marijuana recently. He has been charged with trafficking marijuana.

The police officer had served his department for the last 14 years. He resigned from his position amid the drug charges.

Authorities received an anonymous tip two months ago. That tip led them to a shed where they claim to have found a large amount of marijuana plants. They say that the former police officer was involved in an extensive growing operation. The officer was allegedly caught after authorities executed a search warrant.

People who are charged with drug crimes could end up facing stiff penalties. That may include fines and time behind bars.

In situations like this, it is wise to begin planning a strong criminal defense against the charges. Speaking with an experienced criminal defense attorney is often a good first step. An attorney will do what they can to ensure an individual's rights have not and will not be violated.

In addition, an attorney can evaluate the case to determine how to proceed forward. As we've mentioned in previous posts, the accused may be able to negotiate a plea agreement with prosecutors. In those instances, an individual could end up facing less severe penalties.

It is unclear how this specific case will turn out. However, as is true in all criminal cases, the accused remains innocent unless they are proven guilty in a court of law.
