Birmingham man faces manslaughter charges after fatal crash

A Birmingham man faces manslaughter charges after he was involved in a recent fatal crash that took the life of his fiancé and 3-year-old son. Authorities say they believe excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

The accident happened in the afternoon of Jan. 6. The 21-year-old Birmingham man who now faces criminal charges was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. The vehicle reportedly slammed into a bridge rail guard and was left dangling over the edge of the bridge. The impact of the crash caused damage to the bridge.

The 21-year-old has been arrested and is in jail on $30,000 bond.

The victims' family members are satisfied with the criminal charges. However, they must be reminded that criminal charges are by no means the same as a conviction. Aspects of the case must still be investigated. A conviction can only be secured after the accused is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Police have not said how fast they believe the 21-year-old man was driving or if he had any ill intentions. The man may not have realized how fast he was driving. A malfunction with the car may have caused him to accelerate. In order to examine these possible explanations, the accused and others who find themselves in a similar situation would be wise to speak with an experienced criminal defense attorney.

Facing criminal charges can be frightening, especially in situations when an individual did not intend to inflict harm. A person accused of a serious crime should not assume that the cards are stacked against them. With the right help, they could face reduced charges and less harsh consequences.
