Alabama man faces drug possession charges

Drug charges in Alabama are serious, as they are in every state across the country. A conviction can result in hefty penalties including time behind bars and large fines. One Alabama man could face serious penalties after he was charged with various drug crimes earlier this month.

The 23-year-old man was arrested at his apartment after police were called to the area by the man's neighbors. Authorities claim they found drug paraphernalia, marijuana, prescription pills and spice in the man's apartment. He now faces various drug possession charges.

Depending on the case, a person who is charged with drug possession could face stiffer penalties. Drug possession charges usually fall into two categories. People in Alabama could face simple possession charges or possession with intent to distribute. Prosecutors could pursue possession with intent to distribute if police find certain kinds of evidence such as digital scales, cash and large amounts of drugs.

To be sure a person who faces drug charges is treated appropriately and to ensure that their rights have not been violated, consultation with an experienced criminal defense attorney is often a wise choice. An attorney will work on behalf of an individual to vigorously fight the charges.

An experienced criminal defense attorney can pursue a variety of defense strategies. In some instances, evidence may have been obtained illegally through an unlawful search and seizure. If an accused individual's Fourth Amendment rights were violated as a result of an unlawful search, evidence that was obtained in the search cannot be used in trial. As a result, the charges against the accused could be dropped.
